Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865) was a British novelist and short-story writer known for her social and industrial novels, including “North and South” and “Cranford.” Her works addressed the social and economic challenges of the Victorian era and provided a voice to the working-class people of England. Gaskell’s writing contributed to the social reform movements of her time.
