William Dean Howells (1837–1920) was an American novelist and literary critic known for his realist fiction. He was the editor of “The Atlantic Monthly” and wrote novels like “The Rise of Silas Lapham” and “A Hazard of New Fortunes.” Howells played a significant role in promoting realism in American literature.
